Charlamagne Martel was a Hellrider elite in Elturel in the modern era. A keen intellect and ethically stalwart, Charlamagne Martel was an educator at the Hellrider Academy where he instilled a sense of honor and valor in younger generations of Hellriders. His dedication to ethical ideals, and rejection of any 'ends-justify-the-means' modes of thinking made him an enemy of the Xanthite faction within the Hellriders organization.

Charlemagne Martel was the voice within the Hellriders for the RIGHT victory.

On the battlefield, the Campaign for the Eastern Steppe, Charlemagne Martel led Erik Dawnbreaker and others to end the ongoing conflict between villages protected by the Elturgard and the outlying tribal peoples who inhabit the mountains.

As the people of the Elturgard infringed upon the hills and lowlands the Barbarian tribes of the mountains felt was theirs, they would ride down from their mountain villages, slaying farmers, cattle, women and even children.

Riding against them, Charlemagne Martel fought a large battle with enemies on many sides; however, his well disciplined troops maintained their positions and did not get lured into side canyons and forest ambushes. Scoring a decisive victory against the barbarian warriors, he took many prisoners and then marched to the mountain villages.

With many of their brave men in tow, he offered a truce to the elders of the mountain tribes -- they would be free to practice their ancient ways, and he would even release the prisoners back to them, but they must respect the lowlands of the Elturgard as fellow citizens and resolve conflicts mercifully. Clear boundaries were drawn, with lowland settlers held back behind certain rivers and elevations; and in exchange, the Hellriders marched ever higher up the mountain, defeating a goblin horde which was responsible for pushing the mountain tribes lower and lower in the first place.a

The years of prosperity that followed were in large part due to the mercy granted to would-be enemies on the battlefield that day. Clearing out the goblins in the mountains opened up once-lost mines, which the barbarian tribes reinhabited and yielded wealthy trade with the Elturans in the lowlands. A victory which resulted in lasting peace and wealthy cooperation to this very day.
